Fundraising

We are very grateful for all of you who have donated either their time or money to the Blair Forster Memorial Trust and for your continued support. We have maintained our commitment to raise money through yearly sponsored walks in Hong Kong as well as rely on friends, family and other supporters for their generous donations.

We have also started up another way of fundraising thanks to George Woodman, (LPCUWC teacher 1996-2003) who is now the director of Teng Hoi Conservation Organization and Sensation Organics, a one acre organic strawberry farm in Sheung Shui, Hong Kong. Teng Hoi means “Listen to the Sea” and George set it up to promote correct ways of fishing and farming. He entered into an agreement with the farm where Teng Hoi would provide technical advice and in exchange, the farm would open their gates to allow schools to visit to participate in teaching about the environment and practically helping with the preparation of the strawberries.

LPCUWC, through the Greenagers, a service run by a group of 20 students, was the pioneer school to test it out as part of their service commitments. The exciting thing about this project is that you can order boxes of the strawberries (they look like strawberries, they smell like strawberries and the certainly taste like strawberries) where half the money goes towards a charity of the school’s choice. The Greenagers wanted to donate the money to the Trust and a cheque for $4000 (HK) was presented to John at one of the College Meetings. I applaud their enthusiasm and their generosity in raising money for the Trust in a way that benefits everyone, not just our bank balance! They are not only supporting the Trust, but also the Hong Kong community and the environment.

This year, we have generated over $13000 (HK) this year through the sponsored walk and the Greenagers contribution, as well as some generous donations from an LPCUWC graduate towards Jonia’s scholarship. Last year we received some very big donations from contacts at Chinese International School via Barry Drake and Kennedy ESF School sponsored walk via Ann Green to the sum of $176,216. We really are truly grateful to these wonderful people who so generously donated to the BFMT. With this money, we have been able to secure payment for Ache’s university fees as well as help sponsor more scholars. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Big donations, though, do not come every year. The money that we receive this year is sufficient to maintain what we do at the moment with perhaps a few extra dollars left over for special circumstances. If we are to take on more adventurous commitments, we need to seriously go out to the larger world and find corporate funding that will enable us to support long term projects like the Simon Bolivar United World College (SB UWC) Scholarship Scheme Project.
